“If you are not using this textbook you are working too hard.”

Thank you for considering Gaines’ Criminal Justice in Action, Fifth Edition. We are very excited about this new edition and are pleased to have you preview the text and the supplemental materials that come with it. As Criminal Justice in Action touches on many of the most important topics in Criminal Justice education today, it is no wonder this text continues to grow in popularity with each edition. We hope you will become part of this trend.
Criminal Justice in Action first came to fruition after the authors conducted an instructor survey that relied on more than 100 reviewers. The authors then crafted the design, content coverage, and supplements based upon what the Criminal Justice instructors had told them. The latest edition of the text, which published January 3, 2008, remains true to its origins. The revision plan was created after the authors had collected feedback from more than 500 Intro to CJ instructors. Like the first edition, the latest edition was crafted based on insights from CJ instructors across the country. In fact, you very well may be one of those instructors and, if so, we thank you for your responses.
This website is designed based on what reviewers told us were the key needs of instructors and students:
- Choose “Motivating Your Students” on the left navigation bar, for instance, for a list of tools we’ve developed to address this perpetual problem, which our survey noted is the #1 challenge Criminal Justice instructors face today.
- A second tab concerns “Careers,” which many survey respondents said was becoming an integral part of their course. Be sure to check out the new Careers in Criminal Justice website that offers a unique interest assessment for your students.
- A third important component of Criminal Justice in Action is its updated supplements package. Reviewers told us that supplements are crucial to both instructors and students and we have provided you here with a preview of our latest supplements package, which includes a new Annotated Instructor’s Edition with teaching tips in the margin, “Notetaking in Action” to simplify the note taking process for students, and a Distance Learning Instructor’s Resource Manual, an indespensible tool for teaching in an online environment. In addition, we have for the first time mapped each chapter’s learning objectives to many of our supplements (test bank, study guide, and online quizzing). The last tab you’ll see focuses on the many customizing options you have with Criminal Justice in Action. We offer an abundance of material that you can add to your text, including a chapter on how to succeed in an online course, a chapter on forensics, and materials on writing in Criminal Justice. In addition to these pieces that we have put together, many schools prefer to add their own materials - a description of local CJ programs, for instance, or cover photos depicting local law enforcement options. We are confident there is a custom solution for you no matter what your goals may be.
Finally, I invite your feedback and comments. We are striving to make Criminal Justice in Action the best book on the market, and your input is valuable in making that happen. Feel free to contact me or your local Wadsworth representative at any time.
Thank you,
